Class Microbiology
LO:
Discuss binary fission using E. coli as an example
Compare and contrast the four phases of bacterial population growth
Describe various methods for measuring bacterial growth
Growth
Bacteria replicating is a coordinated process leading to 2 daughter cells
being produced
Enough metabolites and regulatory events are needed
A copy of gene material and mitosis are required by the cell cycle
E.coli Cell Cycle
The cell is twice as long and divides into 2 cells via transverse fission
Once replication ends, mitosis starts 20 mins after
New DNA is attached to opposite sides of the plasma membrane, cross
wall occurs and two cells divide
Binary Fission
Daughter chromosomes are pulled apart and membrane grows
