Class Microbiology
LO:
Describe the periplasmic space of Gram-negative cell walls
Describe the structure and composition of the outer membrane
Discuss the structure and function of lipopolysaccharcide (LPS)
Explain the role of outer membrane pores
Gram- Negative Cell Walls
Thinner, but more complex
Contains the cytoplasmic membrane and a thin layer of peptidoglycan
5-10% of the weight in periplasmic space between CM and inner outer
membrane surface
Periplasmic Space
Contains enzymes e.g proteases, phosphatases, lipases, nucleases and
carbs for enzyme breakdown then degradation
Has sugar transport systems and binding proteins
Able to sense the environment externally of the cell using the chemotaxis
system
