The Motor System
Basic Concepts of the Functional Anatomy of the Spinal Cord
Spinal cord and spinal nerves have reflex circuits which allow quick
reactions in response to environmental changes
The cord’s gray matter is an area for postsynaptic potential integration
White matter inside the cord contains sensory and motor tracts that go to
and from the brain
Spinal nerves contain sensory information and come out of the spinal cord
Nerve impulses travel through the spinal cord to a specific location and the
PNS allows this. It is also complex system that branches of the spinal
nerve roots
Spinal Cord Functional Neuroanatomy 1
, Spinal Cord Regions
Spinal cord is a continuation of the medulla oblongata to the conus
medullaris
Horses tail refers to the roots of the lower spinal nerves
Other areas include the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral regions
Spinal nerves contain a mixture of nerves
Plexuses consist of different nerves joining together
Spinal Nerves
Spinal nerves
Bundle of sensory and motor axons (Mixed nerves), act as
communication paths between the spinal cord and specific regions of
the body
These nerves split into the ventral (Anterior) and Dorsal (Posterior)
roots as it connects to the spinal cord
Ventral Roots
Has axons that conduct nerve impulses from the CNS to effectors
(Muscles and glands)
Dorsal Roots
Contains sensory axons and its terminals are located in the sensory
receptors, cell bodies
Cell bodies are in the dorsal root ganglion
Axon synapse is in the spinal cord
