Colonialism - practice of full partial political control over another country;
economic exploitation takes place for the benefit of the colonisers and at the
disadvantage of the people of the country

Colonial education:
• deprives local people of contributing to education
• Indigenous knowledge is regarded inferior
• Foreign and of strong western orientation
• Aimed at western needs

Aim of education:
• preparation for life and service in the community/society

Critique of colonial (formal) education:
• very small portion benefits
• Divorced from society
• Emphasis on examination and paper qualification
• Productive work excluded; focus on theory
