Unit 1: The Business Environment
By Rais Mauthoor
Ownership and Interest
Introduction
As an introduction to this assignment, two distinguished organisations will be
identified and explored as well as the elements that inevitably surround them, such
as the type of business they are and their purpose in the world of business.
Furthermore, this report will pursue their variations of ownership and how they are
influenced by their stakeholders. The report will then continue with a description of
stakeholders and their points of views on the two organisations.
P1 Describe the type of business, purpose and ownership
of two contrasting businesses
Coca Cola
Coca-Cola is an international, private and profit-based company. Since they are a
beverage company that manufactures and distributes beverages, their business
activities revolve around the tertiary sector. Coca-Cola is not a global-based
company because a trade embargo prohibits their products from being sold in two
countries, North Korea and Cuba.[ CITATION Cor12 \l 2057 ]
The purpose of Coca-Cola is to “To refresh the world in mind, body and spirit. To
inspire moments of optimism and happiness through our brands and actions. To
create value and make a difference.”[ CITATION Coc17 \l 2057 ]
The business is determined as a public limited company because it is a large
corporation and has employed many individuals. Coca-Cola intends to supply their
audience with products instead of services and they do so with their broad spectrum
of refreshing beverages.
Oxfam
The second company that will be mentioned is Oxfam, which is an entirely
different organisation to the previous company. Oxfam is an international,
private, charitable company that operates in the tertiary sector. Their
operations impressively take place in over 90 different countries which
indicates that they are international but not global. [ CITATION Oxf17 \l 2057 ]
Their work revolves around the voluntary sector of business and they are not profit-
based. Oxfam is also a public limited company for similar reasons as Coca-Cola
(which is mentioned above).
Unlike Coca-Cola, Oxfam's purpose is to provide supplementary services and
humanitarian aid to the public or those who are in need while neglecting profit-based
aspirations. Since Oxfam is a charitable trust, many countries will issue a level of tax
benefits that will ease their campaigns. “Our purpose is to help create lasting
