● Nutrition - a science of how food nourishes the body.

● Chosen food exert cumulative effects on the body - good or poor health

● Your body continually renews itself.

● The best foods for you support your body’s growth and maintenance.

● Malnutrition - Deficiencies, imbalances, and excesses of nutrients.

● Influential lifestyle habits - tobacco or alcohol use and nutritional choices.

● Chronic diseases are linked to a poor diet.

● Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US.

● Genetics and nutrition affect diseases to varying degrees - sickle-cell disease,

human genome.




Why be Physically Active?

● People who combine regular physical activity with a nutritious diet can expect to

receive at least some of these benefits:

○ Reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, certain cancers,

hypertension, and other diseases.

, ○ Increased endurance, strength, and flexibility.

○ More cheerful outlook and less likelihood of depression.

○ Feeling of vigor and belonging.

○ A more youthful appearance, healthy skin, and improved muscle tone.

○ Reduced body fat.

○ Faster wound healing.

The Human Body and its Food:

● The energy the body uses comes indirectly from the sun - plant derived food.

● The body requires six kinds of nutrients

○ Four are organic - containing a carbon.

○ Carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins (four organic), minerals, and water.
