ITLS Chapter 1
ITLS Primary Survey(consists of:) - answer-Scene size up
-Initial assessment
-Perform rapid trauma survey/focused exam
-Make critical interventions and transport decision
-Contact medical direction
ITLS Secondary Survey(consists of:) - answer-Repeat initial assessment
-Repeat vital signs and consider monitors
-Perform neurological exam
-Perform detailed head to toe exam
ITLS Ongoing Exam(consists of:) - answer-Repeat initial assessment
-Repeat vital signs and check monitors
-Reassess abdomen
-Check injuries and interventions
Steps of Scene Size-up - answer1. Standard precautions(PPE)
2. Scene safety
3. Initial triage(# of patients)
4. Need for more help or equipment
5. Mechanism of injury
Essential equipment - answerPPE,
patient transport device(stretcher etc)
neck brace,
oxygen and airway equipment,
trauma box
Mechanism of injury(MOI) definition - answerThe means by which the patient was

Rapid trauma survey - answerA brief exam from head to toe perform to identify life-

Focused exam - answerAn exam used when there's a focused (localized) mechanism of
injury or an isolated injury. The exam is limited to the area of injury.
Index of suspicion - answerThe medical providers estimate of a disease or injury being
present in a patient. A high index of suspicion means there's a high probability of
injuries present, and a low index of suspicion means there's a low risk of the injury
