TAQs for this unit
Your Tutor Assessed Questions (TAQs) for this unit are shown below.

INTRODUCTION The objective of this assessment is to give you an overview of
Chemistry and to help you understand the key concepts you will use
throughout the course.

NOTE:

Read through all the instructions below before you begin to
write anything, including the information on your Student
Assessment Answer Sheet.

TAQ 1:
Assessment criterion 1.1

Data Table 1 below shows successive ionisation energies (IE) for
sodium and Data Table 2 shows first ionisation energies across
Period 3 (from sodium to chlorine). Use the data in these Tables to
answer the following questions.

a) Use the data in Table 1 to explain how it shows the presence of
electron energy levels in sodium. You may want to write out the
full electronic structure of sodium to help you and you should
discuss factors that influence the jumps in successive IE evident.

Table 1: Successive ionisation energy data for Sodium

Successive IE Energy (kJ per Successive IE Energy (kJ per
mole) mole)
1 494 7 20117
2 4562 8 25496
3 6910 9 28932
4 9543 10 141362
5 13354 11 159076
6 16613

b) Explain how the data in Table 2 shows the presence of sub-
energy levels (e.g., s, p, or d orbitals) in the electronic structure of
elements in Period 3. Again, you may want to write out the full
electronic structure of atoms that you refer to and you should
discuss factors that influence the changes in first IE.

You should consider the following in your answer:
