MNO3704 Assignment 3 Semester 2 2024 - DUE 16 September 2024 ;100 % TRUSTED workings, Expert Solved, Explanations and Solutions. For assistance call or W.h.a.t.s.a.p.p us on ...(.+.2.5.4.7.7.9.5.4.0.1.3.2)........... Introduction South Africa is estimated to generate domestically a total of 12.7 million tonnes of waste per annum. In the country, municipalities are facing increasing pressures and challenges to provide waste management services due to the growing waste generation. Every year approximately 3.67 million tonnes of this waste are not collected and treated through formal waste collection systems, resulting in large amounts being dumped illegally. Accordingly, South Africa Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) have partnered to enhanced municipal solid waste management. During this collaboration, local municipalities’ challenges and systems failures were identified, and potential solutions investigated to inform the implementation of interventions by UNEP in country office. This report provides a summary of the findings. Download the prescribed report for this assignment: Polasi, T., Matinise, S., & Oelofse, S. 2020. South African Municipal Waste Management Systems: Challenges and Solutions. This report can also be accessed on the module site for this module MNO3704-24-S2 under the Additional Resources folder. Read through the report and use the information, along with learning unit 8 in your study guide and the applicable chapters in your prescribed book to answer the following questions. Remember to reference all the sources you consult, even if it is the report, your study guide or your prescribed textbook. MNO3704/Assessment 3 2024 5 Question 1 [10] Identify the challenges that are faced, by not only local government and municipalities, but also households with regards to municipal waste management in South Africa with specific reference to the report. (Remember to reference the source). Question 3 [10] Based on the challenges identified in the report, propose a few solutions that can be applied to overcome these challenges. (Remember to reference the source). Question 4 [10] Explain the general conditions that are required for the safe disposal of waste on a landfill. (Remember to reference the source). Question 5 [8] It is evident that waste management in South Africa presents many challenges in terms of the effects on the environment and on society as a whole. Despite the increased awareness regarding the reduction of waste in communities, the degree of waste generation has continued to grow. Make some recommendations to industry that can be taken into account to promote waste minimisation. (Remember to reference the source).

Question 1: Challenges in Municipal Waste Management

Key Challenges:

1. Inadequate Infrastructure: Many municipalities lack sufficient waste
management infrastructure, such as landfills, recycling facilities, and waste
collection vehicles. This leads to inefficiencies in waste collection and disposal
processes (Polasi, Matinise, & Oelofse, 2020).
2. Limited Funding and Resources: Financial constraints hinder municipalities'
ability to maintain and upgrade waste management systems. The lack of
resources often results in insufficient waste collection services, leaving large
amounts of waste uncollected (Polasi et al., 2020).
3. Illegal Dumping: The high rate of illegal dumping is a significant issue.
Households and businesses often resort to illegal dumping due to irregular waste
collection services and inadequate waste disposal options (Polasi et al., 2020).
4. Lack of Public Awareness and Participation: There is a general lack of
awareness among residents regarding proper waste disposal practices. This is
exacerbated by limited public engagement initiatives by local governments
(Polasi et al., 2020).
5. Capacity and Skills Shortages: Municipalities often face challenges in
recruiting and retaining skilled personnel to manage waste effectively. This leads
to poor planning, implementation, and monitoring of waste management services
(Polasi et al., 2020).
