Understanding Ethos, Pathos, & Logos
When understanding Ethos, Pathos, and Logos we need to understand that these are things that
people in the real world use almost everywhere. From advertisements, important speeches, or
even movies.
Ethos
Ethos deals with creditability in English literature.
Examples:
A police officer talks about the importance of traffic laws and why we should follow
them.
A pedestrian speaks about how traffic laws can help us stay safer.
Take a few minutes to think about who should you be listening to about traffic laws the
police officer or the pedestrian?...
The answer would most likely be the cop obviously because we all know he is a trained
professional who studied law more than the regular pedestrian.
That is the power of Ethos in English literature…amazing, isn’t it?
Pathos
Pathos deals with emotions in English literature.
There are examples like:
An ad talks about how you should buy numbing gel so your grandma does not feel her
painful stiff back and how she can enjoy her life again. (Maybe adding) Buy HealR! If
you buy this amazing numbing gel your grandma may be able to play catch again with
you outside OR EVEN YOUR FATHER after a hard day's work!
