Homeostasis:
- Balanced internal environment

- Necessary for normal body functioning and to sustain life
- Body works to maintain homeostasis (stable rate) → Internal Conditions

- Blood pH → 6.9-7.1 (Neutral)
- Body Temperature → 37ºC or 98.6ºF
- Blood Pressure → 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury)
- Maintaining Homeostasis:
- Feedback Systems/Mechanisms
- All Homeostatic Processes have 3 components
- Receptor
- Detects change in environment by responding to a
stimulus or stimuli
- Sends information to control center along afferent
pathway (nerve pathway) to control center
- Found inside of body
- Control Center
- Processes the change & sends out a response (an action)
- Determines set point (heart rate, respiration, and
changes over time)
- Analyzes information
- Determines appropriate response
- Brain (“Ceo”), Spinal Cord (“VP”) (majority processed
here)
- Ex: Learning, retrieving memory, heard a sound
you never have before
