The aim of this assignment is to explore the value and eternal effect that group therapy

involvement may have on individuals living with mental health issues as opposed to other

therapeutic intervention approaches. This paper will examine positive and negative features

that individuals face when participating in group therapy and identify what group therapy

means and how key theorists’ ideas are important in psychotherapy in today’s modern world.


The nature of group therapy entails one or more qualified therapists working with several

individuals at one time to provide psychotherapy. It is designed to support individuals with

issues they are faced with whilst being in a unique therapeutic setting (Cherry, 2020).

Groups that are therapeutically connected allows individuals with mental health issues to feel

a belonging and trust, which in turn reduces a degree of anxiety with confronting topics of

the difficulties that they face (Guttmacher et al. 1971).


Since being introduced in the 1940’s, group therapy has adapted within practice to meet the

everchanging needs of service users and patients that present with mental ill health. It has

been shown from studies that group therapies have been at the forefront of treating mental ill

health disorders and issues such as emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD/BPD),

disordered eating and depression whilst also offering a preventative stance for relapses

whilst providing support (Yalom et al. 2005).


Yalom outlines the principles of group therapy with the message that groups can come

together and share their experiences, boost confidence and self-esteem with working

together at its core (Yalom et al. 2005). With these principles, group therapy has shown to

be effective, a study carried out by Thimm and Antonsen between 2003 and 2013 showed
