MAT 240 Chapter 1
Statistics - ANS-the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data in
order to draw conclusions or answer questions
Population - ANS-the entire group to be studied
individual - ANS-a person or object that is a member of the population being studied
sample - ANS-a subset of the population being studied
statistic - ANS-numerical summary of a sample
descriptive statistics - ANS-organizing and summarizing data
inferential statistics - ANS-uses methods that take a result from a sample, extend it to
the population, and measure the reliability of the result; includes a level of confidence
parameter - ANS-numerical summary of a population
process of statistics - ANS-1. Identify the research objective, 2. Collect the data needed
to answer the question(s) posed in (1). 3. Describe the data. 4. Perform inference
variables - ANS-characteristics of the individuals within the population
qualitive - ANS-classification based on some attribute or characteristic
quantitative - ANS-numerical measures of individuals
discrete - ANS-has a countable number of possible values
continuous - ANS-has infinite number of possible values that are not countable
data - ANS-the list of observed values for a variable
nominal - ANS-name, label, categorize; no rank
ordinal - ANS-arranged in a ranked/specific order
