Characteristics of acid and base-
-Acids are sour in taste and change the color of blue
litmus to red.
-Bases are bitter in taste and change the color of red
litmus to blue.
Q-What are acid-base indicators or simply indicators?
A-Materials like red cabbage leaves, turmeric, colored
petals of some flowers such as Hydrangea, Letunia and
Geranium which indicate the presence of acid or base in
a solution are called acid-base indicators.
-When the litmus solution is neither acidic nor basic, its
color is purple.
-Olfactory Indicators-There are some substances whose
odour changes in acidic or basic media are called
olfactory indicators, eg-Onion, Vanilla etc.
, Q-Which gas is released when zinc granules was reacted
with dilute sulphuric acid?
A-Hydrogen gas, it will make a pop sound.
Acid + Metal => Salt+H2
Q-What will happen when we will pass carbon dioxide
through lime water?
A-The following reaction will take place-
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 => CaCO3 + H2O
(lime water) (white precipitate)
-All metal carbonates and hydrogen carbonates react
with acids to give a corresponding salt, carbon dioxide
and water.
Thus, the reaction can be summarized as metal
carbonate/metal hydrogen carbonate + Acid => Salt +
Carbon Dioxide + Water
-The reaction between an acid and a base give a salt and
water is known as neutralization reaction. A
neutralization reaction can be written as
