Caritas process #7: Engaging in Genuine Teaching-Learning Experience that Attends to Unity of
Being and Subjective Meaning - Attempting to stay within the Other’s Frame of Reference
This week I had a patient who was admitted to the hospital because he had an episode of
dizziness. As I performed my primary assessment with my head to toe, he told me about the
circumstances leading up to his admission. It was really interesting and I was able to draw some
lines to what his possible diagnosis might be. This was a stressful time for him as he was quite
anxious about learning what the cause of his dizziness was. I really liked talking with this
patient and got to know him. By attempting to stay within his frame of reference I could
understand the stress that he was under. It is stressful to think something might be wrong with
your heart. Not knowing and waiting to run tests would cause anyone a great amount of stress.
I want to be a caring, nurse that patients will feel comfortable sharing their feelings with so I
can better care for them. By listening and putting myself in his frame of reference I knew that
patient education and using a caring touch might comfort my patient. I want to incorporate
active listening into my practice. I really feel like this was an overall theme for me this week
that I also utilized in my mental health clinical.

I was very much engaged with my patient this week because I was only assigned three patients.
The patients were easy to take care of and I spent a lot of time interacting with each one. I
enjoyed learning about the pathophysiology behind my patients medical history and contributing
factors to his current hospitalization. Having a Robert as a nurse to follow was really great. The
male nurses at Saddleback Hospital really have taken an interest in my learning. Towards the end
of the day two of my patients were discharged leaving us with one patient. I spent time with that
patient and
