Journal 2
Identify one-two Watson Carative Processes utilized with this patient; describe how each applied in
this situation and how each affected your practitioner-patient relationship.

#2 Being Authentically Present. My main focus for the day was on my patient who I
would take 100% care of. My other patients I still lent an ear and a warm hand to, but my
goal was to be authentically present and support my patient who need support throughout
his stay. Holistically I helped my patient by bringing the wife coffee when I brought the
patient water. I honored my patients autonomy throughout the day and tried to care for his
needs. Despite being told he could have nothing to eat before his Lexi Scan, he maintained a
good attitude because I explained NPO. I investigated where he was emotionally and
sustained an appropriate conversation to help instill hope and confidence in his treatment.
I was present throughout the day learning his history and close by to assist him with
whatever he needed. When speaking to him I would sit at the bedside at his eye level. I
utilized active listening skills and appropriate communication techniques to assure that I
was being “Authentically Present”.

Journal entry (Feelings about day, use of Watson’s Carative Processes for self, something new learned,
something to incorporate into my practice).

Overall, the day was very good. I had three patients and had enough time to give each patient
the attention they need, while collecting all the data I needed. I felt comfortable with my
knowledge, medications, and patient contact throughout this shift. I learned quite a bit with
Robert as my nurse on 2-West and became much more comfortable with documenting.
Documenting outside of the room is something new to me. I have to make sure that I get
everything I need during my questioning or I have to renter the room. This is not extremely
important, it is just something I wanted to note. Having three patients to start with and ending
up with one afforded me a lot of time to have patient contact and be thorough. I enjoy
speaking with my patients and creating a therapeutic relationship. Hydrochlorothiazide is a
potassium sparing diuretic! My new drug I learned for the day. Listening to a heart murmur
and discussion heart physiology really benefited my comprehensive understanding of what
was going on with one of my patients. I had a good day and was glad to become more
comfortable with documentation and gaining more experience. I am enjoying clinical more
and more as I become more comfortable with time management and working with those
around me.
