WORKING WITH PARENTS AND OTHERS IN EARLY YEARS
PARENTAL RIGHTS, VIEWS AND EXPERIENCES:

Rights:

All parents have rights when it comes to their children, they have
their own views and experiences that may impact the partnership
work in early years. Parents have the right to the following; the
name of the child, the child’s religion, the child’s education, where
and with who the child should live with, money and the property
that belongs to the child. Following this, there is an expectation
that parents/ careers will keep their child healthy and safe, that they will ensure that they
attend and receive an education from 5 years old until the end of statutory school age, if this
isn’t met then they could face losing their parental powers and possibly be prosecuted.
Parents views can impact the partnership that they may build with the professionals within an
early year’s setting. This may be because they when they were younger, they could have had
high levels of education, positive experiences and a good life that they had experienced, as this
is the way that they had been brought up, this will most likely reflect on their child and the
attitudes that they will learn and reflect in their own life. The EPPE project found during their
research that children’s home learning environment will have a huge impact in their early
development, this being the same for their mother’s development. The parent's upbringing will
make a difference to this as well, if the parent was read to when they were younger, this will
reflect on how they read to their children. If the parent was encouraged to try out new things,
do their homework and were expected to carry out things with a high level of effort, this will be
passed onto to their own children as it is all they have ever known.
The Home learning environment that the EPPE project researched found that when the parents
did some of all the following that the child was seen to be hugely benefitted;
 Sharing stories
 Singing songs and nursery rhymes
 Painting and drawing
 Taking children out such as going to the park or the library
 Letting children play with their friends at home
 Teaching children numbers and the alphabet
 Playing with numbers and letters
