Lesson 8: Cell signalling 2
Classification of receptors
- G protein coupled receptors
- Intrinsic enzyme receptors
= enzyme is part of the receptor
= Eg, Tyrosine Kinase
= Also Called catalytic receptor
= Includes receptors for growth, cytokines and insulin
- Ligand binding describes the concentration of ligand (a molecule that binds to a
receptor) at which half of the receptor binding sites are occupied.
- Dimerisation is the process by which two molecules of similar chemical composition
come together to form a single polymer known as a dimer.
, - RAS proteins are molecular switches, when activated by binding to GTP, they aid in
the cascade of cellular processes like cell division.
- MAP kinase signalling is a specific pathway in eukaryotes which allows
cellular processes to occur eg, apoptosis
