● Book was published in 1987 by Witi Ihimaera
● Māori land-march of 1975 was a protest march from Northland to Parliament grounds in
Wellington. Led by Dame Whina Cooper, the hīkoi was a protest against the loss of
whenua Māori (which means their land)
● The Treaty of Waitangi signed on 6th February 1840, sometimes referred to as Te Tiriti,
is a document signed by the Maori people which stated that they agreed to let other
people live in their country and to let the British make rules about behavior and see that
everyone obeys them.
● Key terminology:
● Cultural assimilation: When immigrant groups are encouraged to “adopt the culture,
values, and social behaviors of their host nation.
● Pākehā: New Zealanders primarily of white european descent
