Lab Report 03: “Levels of Processing” Research Methods for Psychologists 1
The Effects of the LOP Theory on the Recollection of Word Recall
The purpose behind the experiment was to find out if levels of processing (shallow, semantic
and semantic with context) really do affect how individuals are able to recall things as
suggested by Craik and Lockhart (1972). The aim of the study was solely based on
remembering words in different conditions and also looked at whether the expectation of a
memory test could alter the results. The study followed a between-subjects design on fifty-
four psychology undergraduate students with ages ranging from eighteen to forty-two from
the University of Hertfordshire. The results did follow the hypothesis and to conclude
supported the prediction of the LOP theory.
