P7: Summaries skills developed in the investigative project
undertaken

Some of the skills I developed from my experiment of ‘Investigation of Salt
Concentration on Freezing Point Depression’ are:

 Experimental Design – I planned and designed the experiments to test
the hypothesis.
 Measurement techniques – I used accurate measurements equipment
and methods to gather precise information and data.
 Data analysis – I analyzed the data and information that I had gathered
to make conclusions and noticed patterns.
 Problem-solving – I made notes of possible challenges, difficulties, and
unexpected results that we could get whilst carrying out the
experiment.
 Critical thinking – I judged the importance of my results and their
implications that lay between the points of the experiments objectives.
 Scientific communication – placing findings and conclusions properly
through presentation, tables or written reports.

P6: Produce a report using findings, scientific terminology and
protocol appropriately and drawing conclusions

Discussion:

This decrease goes along with the colligative properties' principles, this
suggests that the freezing point decrease becomes more clear as the salt
concentration increases. There was a directly proportional relationship
between the amount of salt added and the level of decrease in the freezing
point, this indicates that that solute amount in the solution has an impact on
the freezing points. Through the whole experiment the water volume stayed
the same, making sure of any variation that had been noticed in the
decrease of the freezing point were mainly because of the change in the
concentration of salt and mass.

Conclusion:

1

, The expected relationship between decrease in freezing point and
concentration of salt was established by my experiment, it also aligned with
the colligative properties' predictions. My results underline and emphasize
the significance of being able to understand the behavior of solutions, with
difficulties for different disciplines in science like chemistry, biology and
environmental science. Something future research could look through is
points that have an effect on the freezing point decrease, further upgrading
our understanding of solutions in chemistry and its applications.

P5: Accurately collect, analyze and present the results obtained

Concentration Mass of salt Volume of
Freezing point
of Salt (mol/L) added (grams) water (liter)
(degrees
Celsius)
0.5 10 1 -1.5
1.0 20 1 -3.0
1.5 30 1 -4.5
2.0 40 1 -6.0
P4: Demonstrate practical skills to assemble relevant
apparatus/equipment and materials, and carry out the project using
safe working practices

Practical Skills

To be able to assemble the apparatus/equipment you need:

 Be able to have the skill of setting up and calibrating certain laboratory
equipment like a scale for weighing, flask or beakers, thermometer and
cryoscopic equipment.
 Have an understanding of how one connects properly and sets up
equipment to make sure of precise measurements and valid, good
results.

Material preparation:

 Have a skill in precisely measuring out and weighing substances like
salt and water, that is distilled, by the use of a weighing scale.
 Having knowledge of sensible techniques for solution mixing to make
sure of thorough dissolution of the salt inside the water.

Experimental execution:

 Expertise in being able to follow protocols and methods step-by-step to
do with experiments to make sure of validity and flow of the results.
