Abstract:

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become increasingly prevalent in higher education, there
is a growing need to understand their impact on academic integrity, particularly concerning
plagiarism. This research aims to investigate the relationship between the use of AI tools
and the level of plagiarism among students enrolled in the HMEMS80 module at a South
African university. The study will examine how AI tools, such as ChatGPT, influence
students' academic behavior and integrity in completing assignments and assessments.
We are exploring this relationship, the research seeks to inform educational institutions
about the challenges posed by AI in maintaining academic integrity and suggest strategies
to mitigate potential issues.

Introduction
We see in our modern world that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in higher
education has greatly changed academic practices. These tools provide better learning
opportunities but also bring new challenges, especially related to academic honesty. As AI
tools like ChatGPT become more available, it's important to understand how they affect
students' behavior, particularly when it comes to plagiarism. This research aims to explore
the connection between the use of AI tools and the level of plagiarism among students in
the HMEMS80 module at a South African university.

Literature Review
Historical Evolution of AI in Education:

The use of AI in education has been growing for many years. It started in the 1960s with
simple computer programs that helped teach students. Over time, this led to more
advanced tools like intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive learning platforms. These new
technologies are designed to customize learning for each student, making education more
effective. (Mills et al., 2022). And also aimed to tailor learning experiences to individual
student needs, thereby enhancing educational outcomes (Graf, 2023).
