Gas Industry
Prior research suggests that psychological motivators significantly impact
employees' safety behaviour in the oil and gas industry. For instance, Alroomi and
Mohamed (2021) demonstrated the high incidences of injuries and accidents,
particularly those linked to psychological injuries, a broad term referring to any work-
stress-induced mental health issue. While Çakıt et al. (2020) agree with Alroomi and
Mohamed (2021) that the stressful and long working conditions experienced by
employees in the oil and gas industry increase the rates of occupational stress and
injury levels, they further argue that implementation of modelling systems for assessing
employees' safety behaviours through psychological motivation is paramount for
reducing lost time injuries. Al Mazrouei et al. (2019) concurs that the attitudes and
perceptions of employees of organisational safety culture influence how safety is
perceived across the organisation. Like Çakıt et al. (2020), Al Mazrouei et al. (2019)
found that despite the existence of clear HSE guidelines for the oil and gas industry to
provide employees with safe working environments, organisations primarily leverage
safety climate as a precursor of injuries, accidents, and safety performance. Effective
occupational health and safety management strategies influence safety performance
and task performance of employees positively within the oil and gas sector (Nkruma et
al., 2021). Furthermore, work motivation partially mediates and moderates the
relationship between occupational health and safety management practices and work
performance, suggesting that employees’ motivation has a major role in their motivation.
Nevertheless, Çakıt et al. (2020) and Al Mazrouei et al. (2019) did not offer concise
conclusions on employee perception of the organisational culture and the role of
psychological motivators in influencing employees' safety behaviour, thus limiting their
findings.
Muchiri et al. (2019) explored the characteristics of safety behaviours in
organisations, suggesting that employee compliance with organisational safety
standards, guidelines and procedures reduces instances of workplace injuries.
