Aims
Purpose principles and characteristic of an effective Team
Define what a team is and what an effective team is
How would you define a team?
People working together collaboratively – working towards a common goal
A team is something which comprises of two or more people
John Maxwell ‘team works makes the dream work’
What is the purpose of an effective team?
To complete something together
Drawing on individual strength to make the collective better
Humans are by nature social creatures – working together can therefore tie into this
To distribute the work in a fair and equitable manner whilst also recognising where
someone has a particular strength
Problem solving
Cooperation and collaboration
To improve the care of the patient (safety) and organisational aspect
Can improve job satisfaction
o Boosts morale
o Support in the workplace
o Sensing of belonging
o Sharing of best practice
o Greater role clarity – what is expected of you and how to achieve it
o Enhanced communication

What happens if the team isn’t effective?
o Toxic atmosphere
o Lack of motivation
o Mistakes increase
o Michael West = 2010 found 90% of NHS staff worked in a team however his
study in 2013 revealed that only 40% of team reported worked in what we
would regard as team (working closely together supporting each other;
reflecting on events together)
