Osmosis and Diffusion
Outline
Cell structure
o Cytoplasm.
o Plasma membrane .
Overview of transport processes.
o Osmosis.
Dehydration.
Water intoxication.
o Simple diffusion.
Dialysis.
o Facilitated diffusion.
Channel-mediated passive transport.
Carrier-mediated passive transport
Levels of Organisation
From smallest to largest these come together to form the next structure
1
, SHN169 - Osmosis and Diffusion
Eukaryotic Animal Cell
Cell Membrane
o Plasma membrane – separates and protects the cell from the outside
environment.
o Semi permeable
Nucleus – contains the genetic information
Nucleolus – found within the nucleus
Ribosomes – responsible for synthesising proteins
Mitochondrion – processing of energy
Lysosome – recycling centre for the cell
Cytoplasm – semi-fluid which fills the cell where majority of cellular process
take place
Rough endoplasmic reticulum – synthesis of proteins
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum – synthesis of lipids and steroids
Golgi – packages proteins into Golgi vesicle
o To allow for the transportation to where they are required
Microtubules – involved in process of mitosis (cell division) and also
maintaining the shape of the cell
Centrosome and Centrioles – also involved in the process of cell division
Intra- and Extra-cellular fluid
