Aims of the session
 To discuss the impact of CAUTI
 To discuss control and prevention strategies related to these infections

Significant bacteriuria - Kass’s criterion
 The presence of 100,000 colony forming units per ml. of freshly voided urine

Prevalence of covert bacteriuria
 Women experience UTI more often than male due to biology – proximity of their
urethra to their anus




UTI’s include
 Urethritis
 Prostatitis
o Prostate – therefore only effects men
 Cystitis
 Pyelitis
 Pyelonephritis

Symptoms of UTI
 Increasing Frequency
 Urgency (feeling the need to urinate_
 Dysuria
 Backache/Loin pain
 Cloudy, offensive urine
o Smell
 Haematuria
o Blood in the Urine
 Protinuria
o Protein in Urine
 Confusion (sometimes confused with a mental breakdown in those who suffer with
their mental health)
