Practical Research Skills in Psychology

⁃ Group work this year will include:
⁃ Prac report 1:
⁃ Work in groups to create an interview guide.
⁃ Prac report 2:
⁃ Work together in a group for the analysis and to produce the
actual report.
⁃ Prac assignment 1 will include:
⁃ Topic: Friendship
⁃ Analysis: thematic analysis of interview transcripts (?????)
⁃ Assignment will be 40% of our module grade!!!
⁃ Group work:
⁃ Work in a group to create a research question for your semi-
structured interview (linked to friendship)
⁃ Individual work:
⁃ Everyone has to conduct their own semi-structured interview
with someone (?????)
⁃ Each person has to interpret their interview themselves; this
will be later used in your data to carry out a thematic analysis.
⁃ Prac assignment 2 will include:
⁃ Topic: Can we predict your intentions to make
ethical/sustainable purchasing decisions?
⁃ Analysis:
⁃ Correlation and multiple regression
⁃ Report will be 40% of our module grade!!!
⁃ Full report, I.e. abstract, intro, method, results, discussion,
references and appendix.
⁃ Group work to create one report
⁃ Each member will be responsible for 50% of the mark from one
section + 50% of the full report mark.
⁃ Some sections will involve joint responsibility
⁃ 5% of your mark will be taken if a reflective statement of how
well the group had worked together is not done
⁃ Reflection may include:
⁃ How were tasks/sections allocated to align with individual
strengths/skills.
⁃ What did you learn about your strengths/weaknesses that
could influence the way that you work in a group in the future?
,⁃ What skills do you think you demonstrated or developed when
you when working in your group?
⁃ How would you use these skills in your future career?
⁃ What did you learn about your personal motivations through
working on this group assessment
⁃ How will these motivations impact your future career
aspirations

, ⁃ Qualitative Research Sessions:
⁃ The assignment:
⁃ The ethical governance of the assignment:
⁃ After making the interview schedule, the tutors will assess how
suitable and how sensitive the interview questions are before I am
to receive the approval needed to engage with the potential
participants leading to you starting the interview process.
⁃ One participant will be needed to conduct the semi-strutted
interview.
⁃ Two anonymized interviews from o bank of 10 interviews will
be needed before analysing the three interviews.
⁃ Recruiting:
⁃ One volunteer from your classmates, usually from the module;
or, if you recruited a participant, from beyond the cohort and
campus:
⁃ Over the age of 18 and is able to consent to the interview
⁃ A student willing to participate
⁃ A PIS has taken place
⁃ A consent form has been awarded
⁃ The data that you collect can help create a bank of interviews
that will be used by PS2103 students for data analysis in the
academic year 2023/24.
⁃ THE INTERVIEW CANNOT BE HELD IN THE PARTICIPANTS’
HOME TO HELP MITIGATE ANY POTENTIAL SAFETY CONCERNS.
⁃ Before you conduct the interview, I need to:
⁃ Provide your participant a PIS and the ability to ask any
questions that they may have
⁃ Have a signed consent form from said participant
⁃ Give out an identification code to the participant
⁃ Record the interview on Teams
⁃ During the interview, your participant has the right to:
