In Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd v Echo Petroleum 2012 (5) SA 283 (SCA), Standard
Bank provided a loan facility to Echo Petroleum. As part of the loan agreement, Echo
Petroleum provided a suretyship in favor of the bank. However, Echo Petroleum
subsequently defaulted on the loan, leading Standard Bank to demand payment from the
surety, which Echo Petroleum resisted.
