PREVIEW
Section B: 'My Book' - M. Xaba

Read the poem 'My Book' by M Xaba before
answering the questions that follow.
Refer to lines one to three.
1.1 In the first line of the poem, the poet's
diction illustrates the setting in which the
speaker finds herself. Based on the
speaker's description, write one sentence in
which you describe the setting of this scene
and one sentence in which you quote any
two words or phrases to support your
answer. (3)
The setting of the scene described in the
first line of the poem is likely the speaker's
bedroom at bedtime. The speaker implies
the intimate connection between herself and
her book. The phrases "go to bed with me"
and "never too tired" suggest the bedtime

setting.

NATALIE FOXX

society? Do you have a favourite poem? If so, please share it with us!

2. Which section(s) in this unit did you find particularly enjoyable or interesting, or gave
you more insight into poetry? Please be as specific as possible (quote from the
section and provide page references).

3. Which section(s) in this unit did you find the least enjoyable or difficult to understand?
Please be as specific as possible (quote from the section and provide page
references).

Reflective Essay: Poetry (Unit 2)

Poetry has always held a special place in my heart, serving as a medium through which I
can explore and express my deepest thoughts and emotions. To me, poetry is more than just
words on a page; it's a form of art that has the power to evoke strong feelings and provoke
introspection. I find solace in the rhythm and cadence of well-crafted verses, and I believe
that poetry plays a crucial role in society by giving voice to the human experience in all its
complexity.

One poem that has always resonated with me is "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. Its
exploration of choice and the uncertainty of life's paths speaks to me on a personal level,
reminding me of the importance of decisions and the journey they lead us on.

In Unit 2 of the study guide, I found the section on close reading particularly enjoyable and
insightful. By dissecting the poems line by line and examining elements such as diction,
imagery, and form, I gained a deeper appreciation for the craft of poetry. For example, in
"One Art" by Elizabeth Bishop, analyzing the repetition of certain words and the use of the
villanelle form helped me understand how structure and language can enhance the meaning
of a poem (page 5).
