Task 1: P2
Carry out experiments to show the effect on the rates of reactions of changes
in concentration, particle size, temperature and presence of a catalyst?
Concentration:
Title:
Reaction between acid and thiosulphate
Introduction:
The purpose of this demonstration is to investigate the effect of sodium
thiosulfate concentration on the rate of reaction of sodium thiosulfate with
hydrochloric acid. The reaction, which produces solid sulfur, will be followed
by measuring the time needed for the reaction mixture to become opaque.
The results will be analysed graphically to determine the order of reaction is
the mathematical relationship between the reactant concentration and the
rate.
Apparatus:
• Stopwatch
• 10 cm3 water
• Measuring cylinder
• Cross paper
• Conical flask
• 5cm3 of bench hydrochloric acid
• 50cm3 of sodium thiosulphate
Method:
1. Measure 50cm3 of sodium thiosulphate solution in a measuring cylinder.
Then I dispensed it into a conical flask. I used the measuring cylinder
just for only thiosulphate to evade contamination.
2. On a white piece of paper, I draw a cross and placed the conical flask
over the cross.
