AKA Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain based on: - severity - mechanism: closed or penetrating head injury - Other features (ex. occurring in a specific location or over a widespread area) Facts: - almost half of people sustaining a close head injury die on site ! Persistent morbidity after TBH commonly requires institutionalized long-term care. What are the effects of TBI? 1. Diminished or altered state of consciousness 2. Impairment of Cognition: - behaviour; memory - emotional control - psychological maladjustment 3. Impairment of Physical function - temporarily - permanently What causes open head injury? cause: - head and neck trauma - penetrating missile injury characteristics of open head injury
