Sportsmanship= behaviour that shows fair play, respect for opponents and gracious
behaviour, whether winning or losing, also known as etiquette.

o admitting to obstruction
o maintaining silence when people are shooting or serving

Gamesmanship= the use of unethical, although often not illegal, methods to win or gain
a serious advantage in a game or sport
o Faking an injury to waste time
o Attempting to have a foul start
o Insulting someone to put them off
Deviance= human behaviour that is against your society’s norms and values, this
behaviour is often against the law
o Doping
o Fighting your opponents
o Interfering with equipment, making a shotput lighter

Why do athletes use drugs?
-to build muscle, train harder, lose weight, stop pain
-to ensure they win
-the belief that others are doing the same
-to improve psychological function, steady nerves, increase motivation, alertness and
aggression
Anabolic steroids:
o drugs that mimic certain natural hormones in the body that control how the body
develops and works
o Increase muscle mass and strength, increase speed of recovery, increased
intensity and duration of training
o Aggression and mood swings, liver damage and heart failure, acne and hormonal
problems
o Weightlifter, shotput, sprinter
Beta blockers:
o Drugs that control the heart rate by blocking hormones such as adrenaline
o decrease blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tremors and anxiety
o dry mouth, dizzy spells because of low blood pressure, stomach problems,
weakness and nausea
o Archer, shooter
stimulants
o drugs that stimulate the body physically and mentally such as coffee, nicotine and
cocaine
o increase alertness, focus and concentration, reduce tiredness, increased use of
fats and endurance of performers
o sleep problems and anxiety, very addictive, stomach problems
o sprinter for the gun, motorcyclists so they're not tired, long distance cyclist for
insurance
