The objec ves of controlling a stage process are to ensure that:
- A en on is focused on delivery of the stage’s products
o Any movement away from the direc on and products agreed at the start of the
management stage is monitored to avoid uncontrolled change and loss of focus
- The project management team is focused on delivery within the tolerances laid down
- Risks and issues are kept under control
- The business case is kept under review
- The agreed products for the management stage meet the agreed quality expecta ons and
are accepted
, Overview of controlling a stage
- The process of controlling a stage describes the project manager’s day-to-day management
of the stage
- This process will be used for each stage of a project
- The ac vi es within the process of managing a stage boundary will occur towards the end of
each stage (except for the final stage)
- Throughout a management stage, this will consist of a cycle of:
o Authorising work to be done
o Monitoring progress informa on about that work, including signing off completed
work packages
o Reviewing the situa on (including product quality) and triggering new work
packages
o Observing, assessing and dealing with issues and risks
o Taking any necessary correc ve ac on
o Escala ng risks and issues that cannot be resolved within the tolerances set by the
project board
