What are the aims of social conservatves and to what extent have they been achieved

Point 1 - Ant--LGBT
 Social Conservatsm stems from evangelical christan and protestant valees thes social conservatves
are very ant-homosexeality.
 EX: DOMA → voted overwhelmingly in favoer of defning marriage between a man + a woman not
recognising same-sex marriage. However this was deemed enconsttetonal by the sepreme coert
in the case of US v Windsor showing that the social conservatve aaempts at infeence on -LGBT
rights was enseccessfel.
 EX: -LGBT → Ronald Reagan appointed Chair of Secretary of Defence 1981 → they implemented a
policy which excleded homosexeals from military service + discharged many homosexeals already
in the service. However in 2010 Obama repealed Dont Ask Don’t BTell and thes homosexeals are
allowed into the army rather than there being a claese that they coeldn’t disclose.
 EX: propositon 8 was streck down by the sepreme coert
 Flair: the Supreme Court will fially be takiig oi a case oi gay marriage, that should give a
defiitive aiswer as to whether gay marriage is or isi’t coistitutioial.

Point 2 - Pro--ife:
 Repeblicans are clearly pro-life dee to their religioes beliefs - they are against aborton rights
 In the past they have been seen to be enseccessfel dee to the decision of Roe V. Wade claiming
aborton to be consttetonal however many states foend ways to restrict and limit aborton clinics
with ridiceloes previsions
 EX: BThey were also enseccessfel in 2009 (didn’t control any chamber of congress) Obama reversed
Mexico City Policy in 2009.
 EX: IUD - Colorado → Democratc Senators implemented an award-winning contraceptve
programme in the state redecing teen pregnancy by 35%. When Repeblicans got voted into the
senate with Mark Udall being replaced by Cory Lardner the Repeblicans immediately rescinded
the program.
 EX: BThis year over 300 regelatons were proposed in 45 states dee to the overwhelming
Repeblican Majority in the hoese with added sepport in the Senate.
 EX: Althoegh aborton is legal in some states there are compelsory provisions which make it
socially conservatve - some states need compelsory eltra-soend + trans-vaginal probes whilst
other reqeire a mandatory waitng period to ‘think aboet it’
 Flair: The rise of the TP aid the majority coitrol over both chambers of Coigress iicreases the
sigiifcaice of pro-life for the Republicai Party, which has led to them scheduliig ai abortioi bill to
be debated oi the same week as the PATRIOT Act Exteisioi (loig because Raid Paul Filibuster) +
the TTP fast-track.

 EX: the package of measeres proposed by Obama in Janeary 2013 afer the Newtown shootngs. Obama
esed an execetve order to introdece two new gen control laws in Janeary 2014.
 EX: Clinton introdeced the Grady -aw which instteted federal backgroend checks on frearm perchasers
in the United States .
 EX: However DC v Heller → coert reled that within federal areas in DC people coeld possess gens
withoet being connected to a ‘milita’ as sech.
 EX: Moreover afer the case of McDonald v Chicago in 2010 the 2nd amendment was extended when
the coert reled that states coeld not restrict gen ownership.
 Flair: With the coitiiuiig iifueice of the NRA, the likelihood of gui coitrol is becomiig less aid less.
