What is the difference between hunger and appetite?
Hunger is an internal drive to find food and is often experienced by a
negative feeling. Appetite is an external drive to find food, often associated
with pleasant feelings.
Name three of the four types of external forces that influence our eating
habits and patterns.
Sensory, cognitive, environmental and health status
There are six classes of nutrients. Name the three that supply energy.
Proteins, Fats, Carbs
Vitamins are considered both
Micronutrients + Organic
Define micronutrients
Micronutrients are nutrients that are essential to our diets, but are only
needed in small amounts. Vitamins and minerals are an example of
micronutrients.
,If a fudge brownie has 15 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of protein and 13
grams of fat. How many calories are in the brownie?
15 x 4 = 60
2x4=8
13 x 9 = 117
185 calories
The current recommendation to maintain your body weight is 2000 calories
daily.
You should not consume any more than 55 % of your calories from
carbohydrates.
How many grams of carbohydrates should you eat in a day?
2000 x .55 = 1, =
275g carbs/day
There are three states of nutritional health. Name the three states.
Desirable nutrition - when the body is getting the correct of amounts of the
correct nutrients to maintain a healthy lifestyle
Undernutrition - when the body is not getting enough of the correct nutrients.
This can lead to body processes not functioning properly
Overnutirition - when the body is getting too many unhealthy nutrients. This
can lead to chronic health conditions.
An individual's health can be assessed using the ABCDEs of nutritional
assessment. Give a brief description of what A stands for.
A stands for anthropometric, which is a person's height, weight, age, etc.
, The visual MyPlate illustrates that 2 food groups should take up ½ of your
plate. What groups are they?
According to MyPlate, fruits and vegetables should take up half of your plate.
Specific parts of the GI tract include the mouth, esophagus, ______(A)________,
small intestine, _______(B)_________ and ______(C)_________. Other organs such
as the liver, gallbladder and pancreas aid in digestion but are not considered
part of the GI tract.
A. Stomach
B. Large Intestine
C. Rectum
Briefly describe constipation and provide 2 reasons that it may occur.
Constipation is when a person's stool is hard to pass. Lack of fiber in one's
diet, as well as a lack of water may cause this to occur.
Sphincters play an important role in the GI tract.
Name two sphincters discussed in the module and using your own words,
briefly describe their functions.
The esophageal sphincter is at the end of the esophagus and the beginning
of the stomach. Once food enters the stomach, this sphincter prevents it
from backing up into the esophagus. The pyloric sphincter opens to let small
amounts of chyme pass from the stomach into the small intestine.
