Unit 33 - P5 Kojar Ahmed

Most if not all businesses will use the internet in some way, whether it be marketing, online orders or
a cost saving strategy. In this report i will talk about two contrasting businesses and the impact the
internet has had on them, the two businesses i have chosen are John Lewis and Pizza Hut.

The internet has been widely used by larger businesses to advertise their goods and services as it is
one of the easiest and cheapest ways to do so, although this is only cheap for them due to their
substantial profits and the benefits that come from having a website, therefore much smaller
businesses should consider cost as a factor when deciding whether or not to implement internet
services in their business. The costs included with implementing a website could include things such
as domain names, servers, Wifi and internet service providers, as well as the cost of hiring skilled
employees who can not only set up but also maintain the website. Currently, both John Lewis and
Pizza Hut have an official website that allows you to purchase their products. For John Lewis,
customers will likely receive their product a few days after it has been purchased, however, Pizza Hut
delivers their goods on the same day due to the product it sells.

Any business that wishes to stand the test of time and operate during times of economic difficulty
should consider the use of the internet. The use of the internet and other similar technology can be a
great way for business to operate outside of their normal ventures, this is usually because businesses
that advertise themselves and their products through the internet are likely to be more successfully
both financially and in terms of brand recognition. This would benefit a business like John Lewis
when it comes to marketing their products. Both John Lewis and Pizza Hut market their brand and
products using social media, which also makes it easier for consumers to get in contact with the
business.

Via the Internet, business owners and employees can connect to customers and other members of
the community easier than ever. Instead of having to call or visit the store to obtain information
about its product or service, customers can email the store to get an answer. The growth of social
media has given business owners another easy way to connect with customers, who can follow the
business's Twitter page or "Like" the business on Facebook.

Another reason businesses like to implement the internet into their business plan is the cost
implications. For example, if a business decides to operate solely online then they do not have to pay
any costs that relate to maintaining their assets and repairing assets when necessary, they also do
not have to pay any rent etc. Other examples of this are if a business decides to close a few of their
branches and replaces them with more servers for their website, this would allow more customers to
browse the website at once. John Lewis and Pizza Hut both a physical and online presence, meaning
customers can purchase products in store or they can purchase products online. For most
consumers, the distance between them and their local John Lewis does not affect whether they
purchase a product online or not, however, this would be an issue for customers purchasing goods
from Pizza Hut because the have to consider whether Pizza Hut actually deliver to their address.

Using the internet opens up many avenues which will have operational implications, this means that
businesses and owners will have to operate their business in a different way as opposed to if they
only had a physical presence. This also applies if the business has both an online and a physical
presence. Having both a physical and online presence allows customers to physically browse
