• Several coastal towns devastated by tsunami wave that followed

Immediate responses
• Emergency services acted swiftly
• Power and water restored to much of Chile within 10 days
• Temporary repairs to route 5, enabling aid to reach communities

Long term responses
• They could rebuild without much need of foreign aid as they are an HIC
• President announced it would take 4 years to fully recover
• A housing project was launched, helping 200,000 affected homes.

• 250,000 houses destroyed, leads to deaths
• All hospitals destroyed
• Key government buildings destroyed

Secondary effects
• Cholera outbreak due to poor sanitation
• People sleeping on streets due to fear of aftershocks
• 230,000 overall dead
• 1 in 5 jobs lost after the earthquake

Immediate responses
• Neighbouring Dominican Republic supplied medicine and medical facilities
• Charities, such as Oxfam, set up emergency field hospitals
• Social media campaign to raise money

Long term responses
• 'Cash for Work' programmes to clear the rubble
• Charities remained to hep locals rebuild collapsed buildings
• Small farmers were also supported to enable them to grow crops and maintain a living
