Suggest and justify ways of
improving motivation in an
organisation
In this assignment, I am going to make recommendations on motivation techniques that
would be successful in Tesco.
Tesco already has some motivation methods already put in place, to encourage their
employees to perform and do better. They already offer incentives such as discounts, but
this doesn’t cover the needs of all the employees who work there. My suggestion to Tesco is
that this incentive is too general and doesn’t cover the needs of most of their employees.
Therefore, what they could do is also cater for those who aren’t driven by money. They could
do this by happy and satisfied with the working condition and what their role in the business
is.
Profit sharing
The first recommendation that I am going to make is to improve on their profit sharing
schemes. Currently Tesco offer profit sharing schemes to employees who have over one
years of service to Tesco. To improve this they could offer the profit sharing to employees
who have just joined the organisation and therefore it would be available to all. This will
motivate them to work harder as they know they have something to look forward to.
The advantages of this suggestion is that all employees will feel that they are given equal
opportunities at their work place and not fell segregated to the more experienced
employees. Other benefit of profit sharing that this will bring is that it will bring employees
together and work to achieve a common goal. The effect this will have on Tesco is that they
will notice the employees working harder and getting results that the managers want from
them.
The drawbacks of giving profit shares to all the employees is that it will cost Tesco a lot more
money than it would if they carried on just giving to the employees who have been there for
a long time. This will mean that their profit records may not rise as they were predicting and
therefore the mangers may not be as pleased for this, this will also mean that less money is
going back to the business to re-invest
I think this that this suggestion will increases the commitment that the employees will have
to the organization and bridges the gap between the employee and employer. What this
suggestion will do is that it will motivate the employees to improve on their work ethic and
aim to get better results. This will obviously then transfer to the business
Line managers should have improved communication
Regular staff meetings provide an opportunity for employees and managers to collectively
discuss issues related to on-going business operations. Managers should develop a written

meeting agenda, with the input of employees, and distribute it in advance. This allows the
opportunity for all potential issues and topics to be discussed and gives employees time to
review the agenda and prepare for the meeting. If it becomes apparent an agenda item is
better suited to an individual or small-group setting table the issue and reschedules a
meeting for the appropriate parties.
The advantage of improved communication between the managers and employees in Tesco
is that it will create a healthy working environment this will then enable the employees to
perform their duties with a positive attitude and the results are more likely to improve.
The drawback of not having good communication between the two parties is that it may
lead to frustrated employees and confusion between the employees. This can obviously be
prevented by having the communication lines open.
Another reason why I’m recommending effective communication in the workplace is
because it helps employees and managers form highly efficient teams. Employees at Tesco
will be able to trust each other together with management. This reduces unnecessary
competition within departments and helps employees work together harmoniously. The
result of a team that works together is high productivity, integrity and responsibility.
Employees know their roles on the team and know they are valued. Managers will be able to
correct employees' mistakes without creating a hostile working environment. When the
manager openly communicates with his staff they can foster positive relationships that
benefit the company as a whole.
Financial rewards
Financial rewards such as bonuses should be given to employees at Tesco. This is because a
shop floor assistant in Tesco would usually earn the national minimum wage and this can act
as a de-motivator as they don’t feel the work they put into Tesco they don’t get credited
enough. In some cases, Tesco could offer quality related bonuses. This is whereby the
employees will get the rewards depending on their standard of work.
What this will do is that it will motivate the employees to perform and work harder to get
rewarded, and continue to have that desire to complete work at the highest standard.
Therefore, other employees may want to receive the same treatment and therefore they will
also improve on the quality of work to get the same rewards and benefits.
The benefit this will have is that it will improve the moral and the desire in the employees to
perform better for their business. This will effectively show in Tesco’s because positive
results such as satisfied customers will have increased
The drawbacks of not doing this is that the employees desire to come to work every day and
still get paid the minimum wage won’t be there and this will then show on their
performance. They will feel not appreciated and may look for another job where they will
feel appreciated and recognised.
