“Explain two consequences of the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan”

Edexcel History GCSE:

Superpower relations and the Cold War, 1941-91

Coloma Convent Girls’ School

Exam practice: 8 Marker

One consequence of the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan was that it formed the Carter
Doctrine. Following on from the invasion, Carter was under a lot of pressure as there was a
fear that communism would spread and that it was a threat to the western oil supplies in
the Persian Golf. In order to prevent this and not come across as weak Carter announced
the Doctrine in 1980, which meant that military force would be used if necessary to defend
US national interest in the Persian Golf. This resulted into the end of the detente and
tensions between the USSR and the USA relations.

Another consequence was that it led to America boycotting the Moscow Olympics. In 1980,
60 countries alongside the US did not participate in the Moscow Olympics as they were
refuting against the USSR for their invasion in Afghanistan. This showed the great influence
USA had over the other countries, which undermined the USSR and made them look weak.
This also resulted into further tensions to arise between the relationship of the Soviet Union
and America.
