Features needed in a specialist laboratory.
There are many different types of specialist laboratories but the specialist lab I have
decided upon is a general chemistry lab, I have listed the equipment that I need for
this laboratory below along with reasons as to why I would need these pieces of
equipment.
Spectrophotometer
This piece of equipment measures light absorption in chemical compounds and
records the data. This is a necessity in a specialist lab as it is a useful piece of
equipment for most experiments and it can record more accurate data so that we
have the correct results whilst doing an experiment.
Fume Cupboard
This piece of equipment is only used for some chemicals which are harmful to the
respiratory system. This is a necessity as not only is it a COSHH regulation to have
this piece of equipment in laboratories, it insures that everyone heath and safety is
protected as well as the environment.
Drying Oven
This oven is used to dry substances and remove any moisture form them that they
might have absorbed, it is also to dry glassware and sterilise it so that there are no
traces of chemicals. When designing a specialist chemistry lab this is an important
piece of equipment to have for experiments.
Gas Chromatograph
This machine is used to analyse substances in the gas phase, it consists of an
injection port, a column, carrier gas flow control equipment, ovens and heaters for
maintaining temperatures of the injection port and the column, an integrator chart
recorder and a detector. In a specialist laboratory this is needed for any experiments
that use gas chromatography.
Analytical Balancers
These are instruments the mass of matter, this would be needed in a lab to measure
small amounts of matter correctly so that the experiments would be correct and the
product would last longer.
Stirrer-Hotplates
This piece of equipment is used to control the heat of substances. The plate has a coat
which makes it chemically and thermal resistant, which help protect it from any
accidental spills or from extreme heat exposure. This is a necessity in a chemistry lab,
as it is safer than using a Bunsen burner.
Ultrasonic Baths
This piece of equipment is used to make sonification, Sonication is the act of applying
sound energy to agitate particles in a sample. This piece of equipment is useful for
