Metacognition ! thinking about thinking; learning about learning
Ex. A student takes deliberate and conscious control of the mental process used for learning through
planning, analysis, synthesis and application.
People with metacognition skills:
Have higher academic success
Are less likely to drop out
Tend to be more productive and creative
Are more likely to be engaged in learning and apply ef fective learning strategies
Have a better alignment between their beliefs about performance and their ability to do a task
Mindset: set of assumptions, values and beliefs that guides your thinking about success or failure
There is 2 mindsets:
Growth mindset ! Just because I did poorly on a test, doesn’t mean I’m not smart and will never do well. I’ll
work harder and try new strategies to do better.
Fixed mindset ! I did poorly on a test because I’m not smart. I’ll never do well because I’m just not smart
enough.
According to Howard Gardner Intelligence is “the ability to solve problems, or to create products, that are
valued within one or more cultural settings”
There is 8 multiple intelligence:
1. Verbal / linguistic intelligence ! Ability to communicate through language, listening, reading, writing,
speaking . Ex. Shakespeare
2. Mathematical / logical intelligence ! Ability to understand logical reasoning and problem solving;
math, science, patterns, sequences. Ex. Microsoft founder Bill Gates
3. Visual / spatial intelligence ! ability to understand spatial relationship and perceive and create
images, visual arts, graphic design, charts and maps. Ex. Architect
4. Bodily / kinesthetic intelligence ! ability to use the physical body skillfully and to take in knowledge
through bodily sensation,; coordination, working with hands. Ex. Olympic athlete
5.. Musical / rhythmic intelligence ! ability to comprehend and create meaningful sound; sensitivity to
music and musical patterns. Ex. Rihanna Singer
6. Intrapersonal intelligence ! Ability to underestand one’s own behaviour and feelings; self!awarness,
independence, time spent alone
7. Interpersonal intelligence ! Ability to relate to others; noticing their moods, motivation, and feelings;
social activity, co!operative learning, teamwork. Ex. Telejournalist
8. Naturalist intelligence ! Ability to identify, distinguish, categorize, and classify species or items, often
incorporating high interest in elements of the natural environment. Ex.. Person who loves hiking and
adventure
