As part of this report o have been exploring the measurement and management of
employees’ performance, so I will be evaluating and assessing the importance of these
measurements in Tesco. Measuring and managing employee performance is vital and
essential in a company but is has it advantages and disadvantages that can affect
positively as well as negatively the business.
Measuring and managing employees’ performance brings a lot of benefits to a
company, by administrating and managing the performance of the workers, the
company can observe and evaluate the different results of the employees, to verify the
performance of these, this also helps to motivate the workers themselves since they
are aware that their performance is being evaluated so they need to work harder to
achieve the objectives both individual and collective, this is can also be linked with
some of the motivation theories given by the different theorists, for example Maslow’s
hierarchy theory because it represents the motivation of the employees through their
effort being appreciated for their good performance, which keeps them motivated, the
different methods of motivation let the company to enhance the employees’
performance beneficiating the company revues and profitability because job activities
are performed more effectively due to the different rewards they receive which is also
linked with one of the theorist, for example Tesco gives different rewards such as
bonuses, different job positions or self-autonomy, helps the business because it keeps
their employees focused and motivated in their tasks activities, improving and
developing the company performance.
However if the company doesn’t measure and manage their employees’ performance
and they fail this process it can bring a lot of disadvantages to the company, for
example, if the company don’t administrate well the employees’ performance , the
company won’t aware of how the persons within the company are performing, so the
company don’t know if the employees are completing their activities correctly or not,
so if those activities are not performed well the company would not achieve its
objectives, becoming a company with poor performance, reducing its revenue and
profitability. Moreover if the company, have different ways in order to improve the
employees’ performance by training and mentoring them, the company would not
know how well they really perform their tasks, because they are not being assessed, if
Tesco doesn’t evaluate and manage their progress through their training, they would
not know how they employees are doing, if this process of measurement of employee
performance is not worked out, it can also affect the image of the company because
the company will be reducing its effectiveness, efficiency and efficacy in their activities,
so meting targets would be more complicated, reducing the permanence of the
company, an increasing the costs, they also can loss competitive advantage, for
example if Tesco doesn’t measure and manage employee performance as well as they
competitors, they will be losing the advocate they have compared to their competitors
because they are performing better that Tesco’s.
