Final 26th October 2015
deadline
Duration 5 weeks
(approx)
Qualification BTEC Level 3 in Medical Physics 90 Credits
suite
covered
Units Unit 1 Fundamentals of Science
covered
Learning
Learning aim A: The purpose of this assignment is to:
aims
A. Be able to investigate different types of energy and their transfer
covered
B. Be able to communicate scientific information
Scenario A new company has been set up to look into ways of reducing global warming.
You are newly employed in this company. Your task is to assist in carrying out
research into energy saving programmes. Your first assignment on the job is to
explore different forms of energy and their conversions and to look into the
possibilities of conserving energy on a local scale.
You will then carry out further investigations to investigate and evaluate different
energy conversion processes.
You are asked to pay careful attention to the way in which your findings are
presented.
Task 1
Write a paragraph on each of the following types of energy transfers:
1. The energy transfers that take place in metabolism.
2. How nuclear energy is transferred to electrical energy
3. The energy transfers that take place in the combustion of fuel.
P6
Task 2
P9/M3/D3/M4
Carry out an investigation to convert potential energy into kinetic energy. Tabulate
your data and plot appropriate graphs to show data trends and relationships.
Present all your findings in the form of a detailed practical report. For grading
purposes your report must include the following.
1. An explanation of the shapes of your graphs.
2. Calculations of initial potential energy and final kinetic energy.
3. Calculations of the efficiencies of your energy conversion processes.
