Recruitment is one of the key responsibilities in managing and supervising people at work is
managing the flow of new people into the organisation and retaining those who are already
there. The process involves identifying the skills and competences that would be required in
new team members. This is known as job analysis and from this is person specification can
be drawn up.
Induction and training. An induction programme is a series of activities designed to
introduce new employees to the organisation. This period is the time that individuals are
introduced to their team and should be seen as an opportunity for team building. A good
induction should involve:
Description of where facilities are
Showing how the employee fits in the team
Explanation of working terms and conditions
Details and organisations history
A clear outline of job role/requirements
There are two approaches to training: experimental learning and counselling. Experimental
learning is carrying out real simulated tasks and each team with the guidance of a trainer
analyses the lessons they have learned. Counselling approach is more appropriate with
management teams as the trainer is a consultant or advisor and works with both teams
individual members. For example, if you want to work at Argos you have to go through
induction and training where they make you familiar with what your role entails.
Coaching and Mentoring involves experienced people who would help a learner to become
more effective. Below are the key differences.
