BIOS 255 Week 6 - Respiratory System Anatomy Lab Report. The respiratory tract carries air to and from the lungs. Air drawn in through the nose or mouth passes through the pharynx and larynx and continues through the trachea, bronchial tree, and the lungs. Inhalation relies on decreasing the pressure in the lungs below the atmospheric pressure to draw air in. Pressure in the lungs is decreased by increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity; the lungs move with the chest wall because the cavities which contain them are closed spaces. Each lung is protected by a double membrane called the pleural membrane. We can assess a person’s lung function by performing spirometry which allows us to measure pulmonary volumes. Don’t hold your breath, let’s go learn about this essential system! Assignment: Part 1 Complete the activities in Anatomy.TV Respiratory System: Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract, Pulmonary Ventilation, Lung Volumes and Capacities. To access Anatomy.TV: Resources tab>Library>Library Resources-Database AZ>Anatomy.TV>Titles(default tab): Choose assigned system>choose assigned sections You will then work through the material and activities by scrolling down on the right. This will allow you to see and work through all activities for that section. Part 2 Complete the lab report. Respiratory Anatomy Lab Report Purpose: Please state in your own words the purpose of the lab. 1. To learn and describe the features of the respiratory tract 2. Learn in detail de cellular components of the respiratory epithelium and membrane. 3. Understand the role of the larynx in the processes of phonation. 4. Learn how Boyle's law is involve in the change of intrapleural and alveolar air pressure to help the air flow go in and out of the lungs. 5. Learn about pulmonary volume and capacity. 6. Understand what factors influence the binding of oxygen to hemoglobin and how oxygen and carbon dioxide is transport in the blood. 2. Procedure: Briefly discuss the procedure for this lab. 1. Identify the borders and components of nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx. 2. Identified the surface features of the lungs. 3. Identified the muscle that is responsible for inhalation and exhalation. 4. Identified the function of respiration. 5. Identified the four major pulmonary volumes and capacities. 6. Explain the regulation of respiration. 3. Data and Details: a. List 4 functions of the respiratory system. 1. Ventilation: Delivery of O2 to the lungs and the expulsion of CO2 and H2O out of the lungs. 2. Gas exchange: Diffusion of O2 into the bloodstream and the diffusion of CO2 out of the bloodstream. 3. Blood pH: The regulation of the acid-base levels of blood 4. Protection and defense: The process of protecting respiratory surfaces from dehydration and temperature change and defending the body against inhaled pathogen b. Identify and label the thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage and the epiglottis in this image of the larynx. 4. Questions: a. According to Boyle’s law, how are pressure and volume related, given a closed container?
