600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
I think the use of authentic materials to teach foreign languages is very valuable. The use of
authentic materials gives students the opportunity to expose themselves to language used in
typical, everyday, interactions. Authentic materials also allow advanced students to practice their
pronunciation and become familiar with new vocabulary they may come across in an authentic
text. Furthermore, authentic texts allow students to prepare to communicate with other
individuals outside of the classroom by guiding students to learn the language they may need for a
certain situation, therefore making the communication more authentic. Furthermore, I fell that
authentic texts make lessons much more interesting to students. Authentic texts can motivate
students to use the language they are being taught to communicate (such as English), as they make
communication more genuine. Lastly, students who are exposed to authentic texts in the
classroom have improved writing, they struggle less with the grammar of the foreign language, and
have fewer problems regarding comprehension.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
I took into consideration the students in the class and chose a text I felt would interest the whole
class. The writing style and vocabulary of the auntentic text is appropriate for the language level of
the class. Furthermore, this authentic text will introduce more advanced students to contemporary
issues relevant to everyday life outside of the classroom, rather than just teaching them new
language. The authentic text contains no biased opinions, nor does it contain any cultural
references. This makes the text assessable to students from all over the world. The topic of the
fishing ban and it’s implementation to protect endangered wildlife is a topic that will remain
relevant for the foreseeable future.
The authentic text introduces the students to new vocabulary, which is not used in every-day
interactions. The vocabulary items I chose to highlight are words that the students are unlikely to
be familiar with. These vocabulary items will help the students with their pronunciation, as well as
their understanding of the topic at hand. Furthermore, the vocabulary items will assist them with
language use.
c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
I chose my activities because they give students the opportunity to practice and use the language
they learned in the lesson. The activities chosen will consolidate the language the students use and
provide students with the opportunity to be educated on contemporary issues (such as the
