• Due to fall onto an outstretched hand
• Risk of avascular necrosis as blood supply runs proximal to distal
• Usually presents with
• Loss of grip strength
• Pain at the base of the thumb
• Tenderness of the anatomical snuffbox
• Diagnosed on x-ray
• Management
• Immobilisation and referral to orthopaedics
• Cast for 6-8 weeks
, Wrist Fracture
• Colles’ fracture
• Fall onto extended outstretched hand
• Dinner fork deformity
• Smith’s fracture
• Garden spade deformity
• Caused by falling backwards onto the palm of an outstretched hand or falling with wrists fle
• Monteggia’s fracture
• Dislocation of the proximal radioulnar joint and ulna fracture
• Galeazzi fracture
• Radial shaft fracture with dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint
• Radial head fracture
• Fall onto outstretched hand
• Sharp pain on lateral aspect of elbow and impaired elbow movement
