A written PAG (investigation) into the effect of exercise on pulse rate will show you how to structure and layout your own PAG and can be used as a template and also great for theory, very in-depth and good analysis.

PAG 11.1 – Investigation into the effect of exercise on pulse rate

Method:
1. First come up with a null hypothesis for low intensity exercise and a null hypothesis
for high intensity exercise.
2. Secondly, measure your resting heart rate for the first 30 seconds and double it,
should be in beats per minute.
3. Then complete 3 minutes of low intensity exercise, which could be walking in the
spot or in a circle.
4. Then straight after the 3 minutes record your pulse for another 30 seconds and
double it.
5. Then rest for 5 minutes before completing moderate intensity exercise, to allow your
heart rate to go back to resting.
6. After this complete 3 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, which could be jogging
on the spot or doing star jumps on the spot.
7. Lastly, straight after the exercise measure your heart rate again for the first 30
seconds and then double it.
8. Work out the mean and standard deviation using the data you collected.
9. Use the last step to work out the value for the student t-test.

Variables:
Independent variable – the different activities. Resting compared to low intensity and resting
compared to moderate intensity
Dependent variable – heart rate after finishing exercises in beats per minute
Control variable:
- Heart rate of the same individual
- Amount of time doing each activity
- Measuring heart rate from the same place
- Ensuring everyone does the activity at the same pace
- Constant pace

Risk assessment:

Hazard Risk Risk level Control measures
Objects on the floor Trips/falls 3 Make sure the floor has
no objects and suitable
footwear is worn
Lack of safe space Bumping into each 3 Make sure there is a
other injuring yourself large clear space to do
and others the exercise + enough
space to move without
hitting each other
Underlying medical Worsen pre-existing 4 Do not carry out the
conditions medical conditions exercise if you have a
medical condition
and if you don’t feel
well don’t carry out the
practical

, Null hypotheses:
Null hypothesis for low intensity – there is no statistically significant difference between
resting heart rate and heart rate of low intensity.

Null hypothesis for moderate intensity – there is no statistically significant difference
between resting heart rate and heart rate of low intensity.
