, 1 INTRODUCTION


This assignment will provide definitions, explanations, discussions and facts about
the historical development of theory, key assumptions of the theory, and its
contributions, seminal authors, and a review of their contributions, the Eurocentric
canon, a critical evaluation and criticism of the theory, including a discussion of the
limitations and shortcomings of the theory. In the second segment of the assignment,
it will cover the topic, Postcolonialism, Decoloniality and Media Studies. The
following will be delved into; postcolonial and/or decolonial theory’s contribution to
media studies, The issues upon which you should touch include: the traces and
legacy of colonialism and coloniality in terms of Third World experience; colonial
education and science; modernisation; language issues; cultural identity;
decolonising the mind; cultural and media imperialism; and race and class. Lastly,
the assignment will cover information in relation to Knowledge in Africa. It will
demonstrate how the use of postcolonial and/or decolonial theory has helped to
unmask the Western canon’s constructions of Africa.
