Mental Health
Week 1: Session 2
Module Rationale:
We have to look at mental
health holistically, looking at the
individual’s family, school,
professionals around them,
where they grew up etc, we have
to look at it as a broader picture.
Words associating with Mental Health:
Universal
Illness
Therapy
Positive
Negative
Well-being
Support
Holistic
Is it a social construction?
It can be argued both ways.
Society has a massive influence on our lives.
Mental illness can be triggered and worsened
by society, but the illness itself is within the
individual.
Society uses these words so often they become empty signifiers and lose their meaning;
someone may have one bad day and describe themselves as ‘depressed’ when in fact
they’re not.
